We’ve only just met the new faces controlling Constance Billard’s social scene, and they’re already making power moves: Days before the HBO Max reboot of Gossip Girl is set to premiere, the show has earned a season 2 renewal.
As first reported in a Vanity Fair review by Richard Lawson, the high-profile streamer has ordered a second season of the teen drama, even as the first debuts to mixed critical reviews. Perhaps young influencer Julien Calloway is no Blair Waldorf, but that doesn’t mean she can’t capture her own audience in due time. Who knows, when season 2 rolls around, she just might be the new Queen B. Here’s the lowdown on the Upper East Side’s next chapter.
When will season 2 come out?
There’s no word yet on when a second installment would debut, especially as the first is only now accumulating fans. Still, it’s likely that the earliest we’d see season 2 would be in summer 2022.
How many seasons will there be in total?
In an interview with ELLE, prior to the show’s debut, showrunner Josh Safran revealed that he wants the new Gossip Girl to last at least half as long as the original.
“I don’t do anything without knowing if there’s more to it, because I didn’t want to wrap it up,” he said. “It’s Gossip Girl, and the hope is, you get more Gossip Girl. What’s the reason for us doing it again, if there’s not going to be more, right? I have three seasons [planned so far], I could tell you right now. We didn’t know it was going to happen for six seasons the first time. But right now, I definitely have three in my head.”
What will the plot be about?
Because the first season has yet to roll out its episodes, there’s little to elaborate on while theorizing season 2’s potential plot. But in interviews with ELLE, several of the cast members revealed their hopes and dreams for where the story could go next.
Jordan Alexander, who plays Julien Calloway, wants her character to develop a healthier relationship with her own internet persona: “I would say that I want for her just to tap more into her authenticity and not edit herself so much. I think that would probably be good for her and everybody else too.”
Savannah Smith (Monet de Haan) said she’d like to get a peek behind the curtain of Monet’s home life. “I really want to get into the relationships she has with her parents and maybe some past experiences,” she explained. “I think that, for Monet, her portal into being human is family. So I really want to find out if she has any siblings, if she has real relationships instead of just posing Julien for a picture.”
And Zion Moreno (Luna La) wants in on some of those juicy romance scenes. “I would just like to see Luna fall in love,” she said. “I think that would really humanize her too.”
Finally, Eli Brown (Obie Bergmann) did his best to keep his lips sealed about any season 1 spoilers. “As you continue to watch more episodes as they come out, you’ll understand—I think I would love to see [Obie] make up his mind. It’s messy.”
Will the stars return?
None of the cast members have publicly confirmed whether or not they’ll return for round 2, but given their enthusiasm over what’s coming next, it’s hard to imagine they won’t be chomping at the bit to get back to Constance Billard.
