It’s been almost 24 hours since Zendaya was named Fashion Icon at the 2021 CFDA Awards, and Law Roach is still on a high. “I think it’ll sink in within a day or two,” he tells ELLE.com over the phone. As the actress’s longtime stylist and image architect, the pressure was on Roach to choose a look fit for the immense honor (Zendaya made history as the youngest person to ever receive the title). After trying two other outfits, they eventually settled on a custom Vera Wang design in a red-hot hue that gave serious main character energy. “My whole thing with clothes is they have to make me feel something,” Roach adds. “There has to be an emotion, and I think that’s what that particular look was able to articulate to both of us.” Of course, Roach had to dress himself too—so he matched his star client, naturally. Here, he takes us through his getting-ready process at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel for one of fashion’s biggest nights.
“The dress is custom Vera Wang, based on a look from her fall 2019 ready-to-wear collection. It’s actually made using the fabrics from that collection. I think that’s really important: [Wang] didn’t have to produce anything new for me—we used something that she already had in stock. I was super thrilled that she wanted to make that happen.”
“[The look is] very me. I was always in love with that collection. [Wang] worked with a lot of plaids.”
“It’s my name! That’s something that Vera has done before—the roman numeral type of script, even in bridal.”
“This Dsquared2 boot is from their KISS-inspired runway collection. It’s super tall—I think there’s a six-inch platform—so it gave me a lot of height, which I needed to carry the dress. I’m a big fan of the band’s fashion. They’re iconic, and timeless in terms of their look.”
