Last night, Max Mara presented its Resort 2022 collection at the chic Mezzatorre Hotel and Spa on the island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples. It was a celebration of the beginning of Italy’s (and the fashion industry’s) emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision to present the show in Max Mara’s home country was a deliberate one, as the hospitality economy has been deeply affected by the numerous lockdowns. The house wanted to show the world that Italy is open for business. In terms of the fashion, the looks were exactly what you’d want to wear on your next holiday: chic and effortless. Bright pinks and magentas popped against stark black and white. Creative director Ian Griffiths lavished the luxe cashmere synonymous with the brand on pieces like evening-worthy caftans, and the label’s signature teddy coats came in the classic silhouette as well as new varsity shapes. There were also crisp cotton tunics in camel and white voluminous skirts with maillot-inspired tops.
The backdrop of the deep terracotta tower and bougainvillea perfectly captured the inspiration of the collection, which drew on Truman Capote’s time spent on the island. It was just what everyone needed to set the tone for the summer upon us.
