Selena Gomez may have spent part of last week in New York City, but she didn’t stick around for the Met Gala this evening. Gomez’s makeup artist Hung Vanngo confirmed over the weekend that Gomez will not be at the event tonight. Gomez was photographed at JFK airport, returning to Los Angeles on Thursday morning. She also appeared on a friend’s Instagram Story playing laser tag yesterday.

Gomez was last at the Met Gala in 2018.
Gomez spoke to ELLE for its September 2021 issue about finding the right L.A.-area neighborhood to settle in. “I tried out a bunch of different neighborhoods because I wanted to know what was going to make me feel comfortable in a city that doesn’t make me feel that comfortable,” she started. “I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll try West Hollywood,’ but I was like, ‘No, that’s not my vibe.’ Then I moved to Calabasas, and I thought that would be nice and family-oriented, but it’s actually very overwhelming and trendy now. It took me a while to figure out what was best for me.”
“I’m a very communal person,” she said. “I find happiness when I’m with people I love.”
Gomez also touched on going through hardship in the public eye and how it made her stronger. “My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks—these were all things that honestly should have taken me down,” she said. “Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?’” She said she told herself, “‘You’re going to help people.’ That’s really what kept me going. There could have been a time when I wasn’t strong enough, and would have done something to hurt myself.”
